Practice Information | prescriptions
We are able to supply your medication at the main Surgery after your consultation. We also dispense your ’Repeat’ items. If you have difficulties getting to the surgery to collect medication please ask about our drop off points - a courtesy service we offer if there is no other means of receiving your medication.

Which items are authorised for repeat prescriptions?

Each repeat prescription has a detachable printed list of medicines on the right hand side. This is a list of the medicines which the Doctor has authorised that you may receive by repeat prescription request.

  • If an item is NOT listed on the printed list it has not been authorised by your Doctor for repeat prescription. If you think that the item is missing from the list, please notify us in writing, by fax or via our website. www.masurgery.co.uk
  • Items which have not been requested for more than one year will not normally be issued without an appointment with a Doctor. This is for your safety to check that the medication is still appropriate for your needs.
  • Antibiotics are not normally issued on repeat prescription. You will normally be expected to see a Doctor before receiving antibiotics.

How do I submit a repeat prescription request?

A box is available in the Reception foyer at Milton Abbas. After hours you may use the letterbox at the staff entrance marked “Prescriptions”. You may also post, fax or use our website to make your request. If you have lost your printed ‘repeat’ slip, please ask our reception staff for a duplicate form. This will usually be issued immediately. If there is a query, it will be issued within 48 hours.

We do not accept prescription requests by telephone or at the branch surgeries.

When will the medication be ready?

Medication will usually be ready for collection at the Reception desk 2 working days after prescription requests have been received. If there is an unexpected delay, you will be informed. If this is a problem, you can collect your prescription to take to the chemist.

How far in advance should I make my repeat prescription request?

Please allow at least a week as we do not carry every item in stock. Therefore if our suppliers have difficulties there will be a delay. Remember that we are dispensing urgent items each day for Doctor’s clinics. All medication has to be checked by a Doctor before it is issued.

Extra supplies of medication

If you think that you will need an extra supply, for example if you are going on holiday, please attach an explanatory note to your request. We cannot guarantee that extra medication will be dispensed without a consultation with a Doctor so please allow plenty of time for these requests to be processed.

Collecting medication

You may collect from Milton Abbas Surgery 8.30 am—6.00 pm daily (5pm Wednesdays and not weekends). You will be asked to identify yourself and the patient if you are collecting on behalf of someone else.

Charges

We have to levy a charge on behalf of the NHS of £6.85 for each item. Changes in this levy are normally announced in the Government budget speech. Many people are exempt from this charge for example those over age 60 and those under 16 years. If you think that you are exempt please let our Reception staff know when you collect and they can advise.

We are an agent on behalf of the NHS for the collection of prescription fees, so we ask for verification of your eligibility for exemptions. Once we have seen the details and they are entered on to the computer you should not need to bring them every time.

All prescriptions have to be paid for at the time of collection and the declaration on the back of the form completed, dated and signed.

Prepayment

You can save money if you buy a prepayment certificate. This may be more cost effective if you have 2 or more items on each prescription every month. Please ask at Reception for details.

Drop off / collection service

We operate a drop off system in some villages for those patients who are too ill, infirm, or who are unable to arrange collection from the Surgery at Milton Abbas. If not prepaid, payment must be sent with the repeat request or the medication will remain at Milton Abbas.

This is courtesy service run by volunteers. Only patients unable to arrange collection should use it. Please ask at Reception or the Dispenser for details.

Changes to your medication

Occasionally you may find that the printed list will show that the name of your medication has changed . Usually it is the same drug with a different name and has the same effect as your original medication. If you have any problems, please make an appointment with your Doctor or, if urgent, please telephone the dispenser on 01258 882037 between 12—1 and 3.30—4.30 or use the duty doctor phone in between 3 and 3.30pm on 01258 882007.

Sometimes a Doctor at one of the hospitals will advise you that your medication and / or dosage should change. Since notification of these changes may take some time to reach us, please ask the Doctor at the hospital for a note to confirm these changes and attach this to your repeat request. If this is not possible, it will help us to process your request more quickly if you attach a note to tell us which Doctor at which hospital has authorised the change.

Medication Reviews

The Doctor or Nurse reviews your medication regularly, and the due date is on the Repeat Slip. For some medications we may issue a prescription to cover you for a short period, but we shall not be able to issue subsequent prescriptions until your medication has been reviewed. If you think your review date is incorrect, please let us know in writing in order that this may be referred to the Doctor.

Queries and telephoning the dispenser

For queries regarding your medication we have a direct line to the Dispensary. You can leave a message at any time. Remember to give details of when you are available and spell any unusual name or medication.

To speak to the dispenser direct, telephone 01258 882037 between 12.00—1.00 pm or 3.30—4.30 pm.

Waste Medication

Please return unused medication to the main surgery for safe disposal.

Please do not leave prescription requests at the branch surgeries.
