Prescriptions

Ordering repeat prescriptions

The easiest ways to order repeat prescriptions are:

  • using your NHS account (through the NHS website or in the NHS App)
  • using the GP online system via the link at the top of this page

These accounts show you all your repeat medicine and dosage and you can choose the ones you need.

You can also:

  • drop the repeat slip in the letter box at Milton Abbas Surgery
  • call the surgery on 01258 880210

Collecting your prescription

You can usually collect your prescription from the dispensary/pharmacy 3 to 5 working days after you have ordered it.

You will need to choose a pharmacy to collect your prescription from. We call this nominating a pharmacy.

You can change your nominated pharmacy at any time:

  • on the app or website where you order repeat prescriptions
  • at your GP practice
  • at any pharmacy that accepts repeat prescriptions

Dispensary

Here at Milton Abbas Surgery we have our own dispensary which dispenses to patients who live more than 1 mile from a chemist. We also support the doctors and nurses in managing medication tasks for all patients. Please note that our ability to dispense to you could potentially change if you were to move house within our catchment area.

Dispensary hours are: 8.30am – 1.00pm and 2.30pm – 6.00pm

We are also open most Saturday mornings from 8.30am – 10.30am. Please double check the website to confirm that we are open if you need to visit us on a Saturday.

If you have an appointment and the doctor prescribes a prescription for you, we aim to dispense those items whilst you wait. There are occasions though when an item may be unavailable and will have to be ordered. These items will usually be available the following day.

For dispensing queries, please phone the surgery on 01258 880210 and ask to be added to the dispensary call back list. A member of the dispensary team will endeavour to call you back later that same day.

Delivering Medication

We have two dedicated delivery drivers who are employed by the surgery. We deliver medications on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Please speak to a member of the Dispensary Team if you need to use this service.

We also offer the facility to collect medications from Ansty Post Office and Farm Shop. Please speak to a member of the Dispensary team to discuss if you would like to collect from this location.

Questions about your prescription

The NHS website has information on how your medicine works, how and when to take it, possible side effects and answers to your common questions.

If you would like to speak to someone at the GP surgery about your prescription:

  • phone our Dispensing Team after 10am and ask to be put on their call back list
  • complete an eConsult online

If you have questions about your medicine, you may also find it helpful to speak with a Pharmacist at a local chemist. They can also answer questions on medicines you can buy without a prescription.

Medication reviews

If you have a repeat prescription, we may ask you to come in for a regular review. We will be in touch when you need to come in for a review.

What to do with old medicines

Take it to the pharmacy you got it from or bring it in to the surgery. Do not put it in your household bin or flush it down the toilet.

About pharmacists

Here at the surgery we have a Dispensing Team. We do not have a qualified pharmacist here on site at the surgery.

If you live close to a chemist though, you may find it helpful to know that as qualified healthcare professionals, pharmacists can offer advice on minor illnesses such as:

  • coughs
  • colds
  • sore throats
  • tummy trouble
  • aches and pains

They can also advise on medicine that you can buy without a prescription.

Additionally, community pharmacies can now supply NHS medicines to treat seven common health conditions via the Pharmacy First service which covers:

  • Earache (1-17 years)
  • Impetigo (1 year and over)
  • Infected insect bite (1 year and over)
  • Shingles (18 years and over)
  • Sinusitis (12 years and over)
  • Sore throat (5 years and over)
  • Uncomplicated urinary tract infections in women (16-64 years)

Many pharmacies are open until late and at weekends. You do not need an appointment.

Most pharmacies have a private consultation room where you can discuss issues with pharmacy staff without being overheard.
